Astronomy doctoral candidate Kate Dibiasky discovers a comet heading towards Earth, but her warnings are initially ignored by the White House; eventually, the government proposes diverting the comet with nuclear weapons, but this plan is disrupted when a billionaire realizes the comets value and opts for commercial exploitation instead, leading to a divided world opinion; as the comet grows closer, Dibiasky organizes a protest campaign, but ultimately, the comet strikes Earth, leaving only a few survivors who escape on a spaceship and land on an alien planet thousands of years later, while Jason remains as the last man on Earth.
