Marthandan becomes the new ruler of a kingdom facing issues like food shortages and high unemployment, but faces threats from his cousin aided by a high priest, while look-alike Veerangan leads violent protests, and later saves Marthandans life and takes his place to uplift the poor before rescuing Marthandan and defeating the conspirators.
