An adaptation of The Wizard of Oz that tries to capture the essence of the African-American experience. The Wiz is a 1978 American English-language Adventure Family motion picture featuring Diana Ross, Michael Jackson, Nipsey Russell, Ted Ross, Lena Horne, Richard Pryor and Toney Brealond. The movie is based on The Wonderful Wizard of Oz by L. Frank Baum The Wiz by William F. Brown. Motown Productions was the production house involved in the project along with executive producer(s) Rob Cohen. The Wiz is written by L. Frank Baum, William F. Brown and Joel Schumacher and it is directed by Sidney Lumet. Universal Pictures acquired the distribution rights for the movie. The Wiz was released on 24th October 1978 and takes a screen time of 133 minutes. The Wiz was made on a budget of $24 million and at the box office it grossed only $21 million. The screenplay for the movie was written by Joel Schumacher. Cinematography was done by Oswald Morris and editing by Dede Allen. The music was composed by Charlie Smalls along with Nickolas Ashford, Valerie Simpson, Anthony Jackson, Luther Vandross and Quincy Jones.
