During World War II, Liesel Meminger, a young girl, steals her first book and develops a love for reading while living with foster parents and befriending a boy named Rudy, becoming conflicted as she joins the Hitler Youth and witnessing book burnings before befriending the mayors wife and harboring a Jewish man in her basement, eventually losing her family in a bombing but being reunited with her friend Max after the war ends, hinting at her future as a successful writer. The Book Thief is a 2013 English-language Drama War motion picture featuring Geoffrey Rush, Emily Watson, Sophie N Lisse, Roger Allam, Sophie Nelisse, Heike Makatsch and Arnold Weglorz. The movie is based on The Book Thief by Markus Zusak. Fox 2000 Pictures in association with Sunswept Entertainment, Studio Babelsberg and TSG Entertainment. were the production houses involved in the project along with executive producer(s) Karen Rosenfelt and Ken Blancato. The Book Thief is written by Markus Zusak and Michael Petroni and it is directed by Brian Percival. 20th Century Fox acquired the distribution rights for the movie. The Book Thief was released on 6th February 2014 in English and German languages and takes a screen time of 130 minutes. The Book Thief was made on a budget of $30 million and at the box office it grossed only $5 million. Cinematography was done by Florian Ballhaus and editing by John Wilson. The music was composed by Academy Award Oscar winner John Williams.
