The crew of a newly commissioned starship is forced to interrupt their shore leave and rescue hostages on a neutral planet, only to discover that Spocks estranged half-brother, Sybok, is orchestrating the crisis in his quest to find God on a mythical planet, ultimately leading to a series of events where Sybok gains the loyalty of the crew, the Enterprise breaches the Great Barrier, and a powerful being claiming to be God is encountered, resulting in Sybok sacrificing himself and the entity being weakened but not destroyed until a Klingon ship intervenes.
