The Christ of Nanjing

Tony Au directed this Hong Kong-Japanese co-production lovingly adapted for the screen by Joyce Chan. Tony Leung stars as Ryuichi Okagawa, a Japanese writer who worked as a reporter in China and has been sick ever since his return home. While in China, Okagawa had met a devoutly religious girl named Jin-hua. Okagawa was born with a predisposition to agonizing recurrent migraines, but found happiness with Jin-hua and married her. Unfortunately, he already had a wife in Japan, and this revelation crushed Jin-hua. When Okagawa returned home, leaving Jin-hua behind, she was forced to work as a prostitute, catching both a severe case of the flu and a rather less socially acceptable condition. Meanwhile, Okagawa s guilt has torn him apart enough for him to return to China in an attempt to bring Jin-hua home with him to get medical attention, but the girl is already too far gone for his help. The Christ of Nanjing is a 1995 Cantonese-language Drama Romance film featuring Tony Leung Ka-fai, Yasuko Tomita, Tony Ka Fai Leung, Shinobu Chihara, Jing Chow, Shun Lau and Johnson Yuen. The movie is based on The Christ of Nanjing by Akutagawa Ryunosuke. Golden Harvest in association with Amuse and Inc. were the production houses involved in the project along with executive producer(s) Chua Lam and Akira Morishige. The Christ of Nanjing is written by Ryûnosuke Akutagawa and Joyce Chan and it is directed by Tony Au. Golden Harvest acquired the distribution rights for the movie. The Christ of Nanjing was released on 24th November 1995 in Cantonese and Japanese languages and takes a screen time of 99 minutes. The movie made a box office gross of $0 million.
