The film portrays the life of Emperor Asoka, who starts as a General, becomes the emperor after his fathers abdication, battles his half-brother, falls in love with Kaurwaki, marries Devi, turns brutal as an emperor, declares war against Kalinga, and eventually realizes the consequences of his actions, leading him to embrace Buddhism and use his empire for spreading peace. Asoka is a 2001 Indian Hindi-language Action Biography film starring Shah Rukh Khan, Kareena Kapoor, Ajith Kumar, Hrishita Bhatt, Danny Denzongpa, Kareena Kapoor Khan and Suresh Oberoi. Red Chillies Entertainment was the production house involved in the project along with executive producer(s) Shah Rukh Khan, Gauri Khan and Juhi Chawla. Asoka is written by Saket Chaudhary, Santosh Sivan and Abbas Tyrewala and it is directed by Santosh Sivan. Red Chillies Entertainment acquired the distribution rights for the movie. Asoka was released on 15th March 2001 and takes a screen time of 176-171 minutes ,145 minutes. Asoka was made on a budget of ₹12 crore and at the box office it grossed only ₹11 crore. The screenplay for the movie was written by Santosh Sivan and Saket Chaudhary. Cinematography was done by Santosh Sivan and editing by A. Sreekar Prasad. The music was composed by National Award winner Anu Malik along with Sandeep Chowta. At the 2002 IIFA Awards It won an award for Best Cinematography.
