Juhi Chawla (born 13 November 1967) is an Indian actress, model, film producer, and the winner of the 1984 Miss India beauty contest. Chawla has worked predominantly in Hindi language films, in addition to Punjabi, Tamil, Kannada, Malayalam, Telugu, and Bengali language films. A top leading actress in the late 1980s, 1990s and early 2000s, she has garnered particular praise for her comic timing and vivacious on-screen persona. Chawla made her film debut in Sultanat (1986), and received wider public recognition with the highly successful tragic romance Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak (1988), for which she won the Filmfare Award for Lux New Face of the Year. She went on to establish herself as a leading actress of Hindi cinema with the top grossing family drama Swarg (1990), and the thriller Pratibandh (1990). She achieved further success with the super-hit romance Bol Radha Bol (1992), and the romantic comedy Raju Ban Gaya Gentleman (1992). She then appeared in consecutive top grossing films, garnering appreciation for her roles as a bar dancer in the action thriller Lootere (1993), a sacrificing woman in the romance Aaina (1993), a South Indian in the romantic comedy Hum Hain Rahi Pyar Ke (1993), for which she won the Filmfare Award for Best Actress, and a victimized woman in the romantic thriller Darr (1993). She went on to play strong roles in box office successes Deewana Mastana (1997), Yes Boss (1997) and Ishq (1997). In the 2000s, Chawla began working with independent filmmakers in art-house projects, garnering critical acclaim for her work in Jhankaar Beats (2003), 3 Deewarein (2003), My Brother Nikhil (2005), Bas Ek Pal (2006), I Am (2011), Gulaab Gang (2014) and Chalk n Duster (2016). In addition to acting, Chawla is a television personality, a humanitarian, and the co-owner of the Indian Premier League cricket team Kolkata Knight Riders. She married the industrialist Jay Mehta in 1995 and has two children with him.
