The victims of an encephalitis epidemic many years ago have been catatonic ever since, but now a new drug offers the prospect of reviving them. Awakenings is a 1990 American English-language Biography Drama motion picture starring Robert De Niro, Robin Williams, John Heard, Julie Kavner, Penelope Ann Miller, Max Von Sydow and Jan Saint. The movie is inspired from Awakenings by Oliver Sacks. Lasker/Parkes Productions was the production house involved in the project along with executive producer(s) Walter F. Parkes and Lawrence Lasker. Awakenings is written by Oliver Sacks and Steven Zaillian and it is directed by Penny Marshall. Columbia Pictures acquired the distribution rights for the movie.
