Dave, the Chipmunks, and the Chipettes cause trouble on a cruise ship, encounter their former supervisor, go on a para-sailing adventure, get stranded on an island, find a treasure in a cave, save Jeanette from an unstable castaway, escape an erupting island, and ultimately perform at the awards show while Ian sells the castaways story to Hollywood. The movie is based on Alvin and the Chipmunks by Ross Bagdasarian Sr. The Chipettes by Janice Karman. Fox 2000 Pictures in association with Regency Enterprises. were the production houses involved in the project along with executive producer(s) Janice Karman, Ross Bagdasarian Jr and Ross Bagdasarian Jr. Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked is written by Jonathan Aibel, Glenn Berger, Ross Bagdasarian Jr, Janice Karman, Ross Bagdasarian Jr., Neil A. Machlis, Arnon Milchan, Karen Rosenfelt and Steve Waterman and it is directed by Mike Mitchell. 20th Century Fox acquired the distribution rights for the film.
