Kaliyattam

This is a film adaptation of Shakespeares Othello, set in a village, where jealousy and rivalries arise among the characters involving Kannan Perumalayan, Thamara, and Paniyan, leading to tragic consequences. Kaliyattam is a 1997 Indian Malayalam-language Drama movie starring Suresh Gopi, Manju Warrier, Biju Menon, Arun Lal, Bindu Panikkar, Narendra Prasad and Paul Michael. The movie is inspired from William Shakespeare s Othello. Jayalakshmi Films was the production house involved in the project along with executive producer(s) K. Radhakrishnan. Kaliyattam is written by Balram Mattanoor and William Shakespeare and it is directed by Jayaraj Nair. Surya Cine Arts acquired the distribution rights for the movie. Kaliyattam was released on 29th August 1997 and takes a screen time of 130 minutes. The screenplay for the movie was written by Balram Mattannur. Cinematography was done by M. J. Radhakrishnan and editing by B. Lenin and V. T. Vijayan. The music was composed by Kaithapram D. Nampoothiri along with Rajamani. At the 1998 National Film Awards It won an award for Best Actor (Balachandra Menon).
