The show follows the journey of best friends Kiyo and Sumire as they pursue their dreams of becoming geiko and maiko in Kyotos Gion district, with Kiyo discovering her hidden talent as a cook for the all-female house they reside in. The Makanai: Cooking for the Maiko House is a 2023 Japanese Japanese-language Comedy Drama television show featuring Nana Mori, Natsuki Deguchi, Aju Makita, Ai Hashimoto, Mayu Matsuoka, Keiko Matsuzaka and Toshinori Omi. The series is based on Kiyo in Kyoto by Aiko Koyama. The television show is written and directed by Hirokazu Kore-eda. Series originally aired on Netflix. The screenplay for the series was written by Mami Sunada. Cinematography was done by Ryuto Kondo.
