Mary, a struggling woman from Cornwall, is sent to Sydney as a convict where she befriends a smuggler named Will and meets Lt Clarke who helps her, but when she becomes pregnant, Clarke abuses another convict out of anger, leading Mary to give birth on a ship and later marry Will, seeking his assistance in stealing supplies with the help of her deceived education sponsor, Clarke, resulting in their escape to Timor, where they are pursued by Clarke, ultimately resulting in Will sacrificing himself to protect Mary and their children, leading to Marys arrest and subsequent release with public support upon returning to England, while Clarke is left in disgrace and Mary reflects on her familys tragedy but resolves to carry on for their sake.
