The Westerner is a 1940 English-language Drama Romance movie written by Jo Swerling, Niven Busch, Stuart N. Lake, W.r. Burnett, Lillian Hellman, Oliver La Farge and Dudley Nichols. The movie is directed by William Wyler. Judge Roy Bean, a self-appointed hanging judge in Vinegarroon, Texas, befriends saddle tramp Cole Harden, who opposes Bean's policy against homesteaders. The westerner stars Gary Cooper, Walter Brennan, Doris Davenport, Fred Stone, Forrest Tucker, Paul Hurst and Ted Wells and it received positive reviews from critics when it was released. The Westerner was made on a budget of $1 million. At the 1941 Oscar Awards It won an award for Best Actor in a Supporting Role (Walter Brennan).
