The novel, set in Rome and Jerusalem during the time of Jesus Christ, follows the journey of Roman tribune Marcellus Gallio and his struggle to come to terms with his role in the crucifixion of Jesus and eventual conversion to Christianity. The Robe is a 1953 American English-language Drama History movie featuring Richard Burton, Jean Simmons, Victor Mature, Michael Rennie, Jay Robinson, Dean Jagger and Sally Yarnell. The movie is based on The Robe by Lloyd C. Douglas. The Robe was Produced by Frank Ross. The Robe is written by Philip Dunne, Gina Kaus, Lloyd C. Douglas and Albert Maltz and it is directed by Henry Koster. 20th Century Fox acquired the distribution rights for the motion picture. The Robe was released on 4th December 1953 and takes a screen time of 135 minutes. The Film was successful at box office. The Robe was made on a budget of $4 million and it was a super hit at box office gross of $36 million. The screenplay for the movie was written by Gina Kaus, Albert Maltz and Philip Dunne. Cinematography was done by Leon Shamroy and editing by Barbara McLean. The music was composed by Alfred Newman. At the 1954 Oscar Awards It won 2 awards including: Best Art Direction-Set Decoration, Color and Best Costume Design, Color.

      Like all the subsequent sword and sandal Hollywood movies of the 1950s and early 1960s, there is something inherently hokey about The Robe, with its historically accurate, yet ridiculously clean and well pressed costumes and its insistence on then contemporary hair styles that never allow a single strand to be out of place (to realize just how insistent this style was, note that even the great Stanley Kubrick couldnt get past it in Spartacus).
