A former Confederate soldier travels to an Illinois town seeking help for his mute son, gets into a fight over their dog with a rancher, and ends up working on a farm owned by a woman pressured to sell her land, where he sells the dog to finance his sons Minnesota trip, but eventually returns with the dog to cure his sons muteness.
