An academic obsessed with finding habitable planets loses the love of his life, becomes the last person on Earth, and is eventually unable to contact a space mission returning from one of the habitable moons he discovered; he befriends a young mute girl, faces difficulties trying to contact the mission, and ultimately advises the crew not to return to Earth, while imagining being on one of the habitable moons himself.
