The movie is based on The Last King of Scotland by Giles Foden. DNA Films in association with Film 4. were the production houses involved in the project along with executive producer(s) Charles Steel, Lisa Bryer and Andrea Calderwood. The Last King of Scotland is written by Peter Morgan, Jeremy Brock and Giles Foden and it is directed by Kevin Macdonald. Fox Searchlight Pictures acquired the distribution rights for the motion picture. The Last King of Scotland was released on 1st February 2007 and takes a screen time of 123 minutes.
