On Christmas morning, Gawain wakes up in a brothel next to his lover Essel, returns to Camelot for a feast with King Arthur, accepts the challenge of the mysterious Green Knight to strike him in exchange for his green axe, survives one year later after beheading the Knight, embarks on a journey to the Green Chapel, encounters a boy who steals his belongings, finds shelter in an abandoned cottage where he meets Winifred and retrieves her lost skull in exchange for his lost belongings, befriends a fox, arrives at Lord Bertilaks castle where he is tempted by the Lady with a green girdle, continues to the Green Chapel where he flinches when the Knight swings the axe, imagines a different life but ultimately faces his fate by removing the green girdle and being beheaded by the Knight.
