During the Spanish Civil War, a man hides in fear of reprisal killings for criticizing the Nationalist army, evades capture with his wifes help, experiences betrayal, isolation, and his wifes arrest, leading to his increasing detachment from the outside world until an amnesty in 1969 allows him to leave his hiding spot and join others who were also in hiding.
