During the Cuban Missile Crisis, a mathematician and chess champion is recruited by the US government to play in a chess tournament in Warsaw, but his alcoholism and erratic behavior jeopardize his ability to compete, as he becomes entangled in a web of espionage and suspects a Soviet officer to be a double agent, ultimately forcing him to make a decision with the potential to alter history.
