A Portuguese Jesuit priest witnesses the persecution of Christians in Japan and, years later, two Italian priests seek him out, but after facing immense trials, one renounces his faith under pressure while the other ultimately finds a way to honor his beliefs in death. Silence is written by Martin Scorsese and Jay Cocks and it is directed by Martin Scorsese. Paramount Pictures acquired the distribution rights for the film. The motion picture has a running time of 161 minutes. Silence was made on a budget of $40 million and at the box office it grossed only $23 million. The screenplay for the movie was written by Jay Cocks and Martin Scorsese. Cinematography was done by Rodrigo Prieto and editing by Thelma Schoonmaker. The music was composed by Kim Allen Kluge along with Kathryn Kluge.
