Two rival tribes in India are brought together at an Independence Day celebration when two individuals fall in love, but their love faces opposition and superstition from the tribes and landlords. Ponni is a 1976 Indian Malayalam-language Drama movie featuring Kamal Haasan, Lakshmi, S Lakshman Kumar, Bahadoor Kunjalu, Bahadur, Paravoor Bharathan and Rajakumari Venu. The movie is based on Ponni by Malayattoor Ramakrishnan. Manjilas was the production house involved in the project along with executive producer(s) M. O. Joseph. Ponni is written by Thoppil Bhasi and Malayattoor Ramakrishnan and it is directed by Thoppil Bhasi. Central Pictures acquired the distribution rights for the movie.
