A troubled girl finds comfort in Catholicism and becomes a nun, facing strict control from a traditional Mother Superior but finding support from a progressive nun, as the Catholic Church undergoes changes during Vatican II; eventually, the Mother Superior is forced to accept the changes by the Archbishop, but the film ends by showing the mass departure of nuns after Vatican II.
