A man named Menon is murdered by his taxi driver, and the story reveals that Menons nephew, Ajith, is in love with Menons daughter, Rekha, but their relationship is disapproved of by Menon; later, Rekha is engaged to a criminal named Vinod, who hires someone to kill Menon, but Vinods plans unravel when Rekha hides a confession letter and is wrongly convicted of murder until the truth is discovered by the Circle Inspector. New Year is a 1989 Indian Malayalam-language Drama Crime film featuring Suresh Gopi, Urvasi, Babu Antony, Silk Smitha, Sukumaran, Jayaram Subramaniam and Thilakan. Evershine Productions was the production house involved in the project along with executive producer(s) Sst Subramaniyam. New Year is written by Kaloor Dennis and directed by Viji Tampi and Viji Thampi. New Year was released on 1st January 1989. Cinematography was done by Santhosh Sivan. The music was composed by Shyam.

The heist sequences are tensely staged, goofily over the top convolution in the spirit of Oceans Eleven or Shahrukh Khans own Don remake and sequel, defying logic and even rational linearity at every turn, and quite fun. ( Read More )

Stripped of its admittedly strong cast as effective as Duchovny is here, Wheeler (best known for her stint as Janice on Friends) is undoubtedly the films strongest asset New Years Day cant help but come off as a needlessly avant garde effort that might hold some appeal for fans of the filmmaker but few others.
