Music of the Heart is a 1999 English-language Drama film written by Pamela Gray and directed by Wes Craven and produced by Susan Kaplan, Marianne Maddalena, Allan Miller and Walter Scheuer under the banner of Craven/Maddalena Productions in collaboration with Miramax Films. The film is a dramatization of the true story of Roberta Guaspari, portrayed by Meryl Streep, who co-founded the Opus 118 Harlem School of Music and fought for music education funding in New York City public schools. Music of the heart features Meryl Streep in the lead role along with an ensemble cast including Aidan Quinn, Angela Bassett, Gloria Estefan, Jane Leeves, Kieran Culkin and Jay O. Sanders. The music was composed by Mason Daring. Cinematography was done by Peter Deming and editing by Gregg Featherman and Patrick Lussier. The motion picture has a running time of 123 minutes. Music of the Heart was made on a budget of $27 million and at the box office it grossed only $14 million. Distribution rights for the film were acquired by Miramax Films.
