In 1936, an English schoolteacher named Jane travels to Trippuvur, South India to help a Christian missionary protect young girls from temple prostitution and becomes embroiled in a local conflict, ultimately rescuing a girl and facing accusations of kidnapping, but finds support from an American doctor and continues to save children in need.
