In 1927, blues singer Ma Rainey clashes with her producer and manager, demands her desires, involves her stuttering nephew in the recording, confides in a band member about mistreatment by her white bosses, witnesses a confrontation after her friend Dussie Mae has sex with trumpet player Levee, finishes recording despite equipment failure, fires Levee, who later has a breakdown, stabs a band member, and sees his songs recorded by a white band.
