The film depicts the life of the 14th Dalai Lama, from his childhood identification and installation as the Dalai Lama to his attempts to negotiate with Chairman Mao and eventual escape to India, expressing hope for his return to Tibet. Kundun is a 1998 American English-language Documentary Drama movie starring Tenzin Thuthob Tsarong, Gyurme Tethong, Tulku Jamyang Kunga Tenzin, Tenzin Yeshi Paichang, The Dalai Lama, Roger Deakins and Tashi Dhondup. Touchstone Pictures in association with StudioCanal. were the production houses involved in the project along with executive producer(s) Barbara De Fina and Martin Scorcese. Kundun is written by Melissa Mathison and directed by Martin Scorsese. Buena Vista Pictures acquired the distribution rights for the film. Kundun was released on 16th January 1998 and takes a screen time of 134 minutes. Kundun was made on a budget of $28 million and at the box office it grossed only $5 million. Cinematography was done by Roger Deakins and editing by Thelma Schoonmaker. The music was composed by Philip Glass.
