After a devastating breakup, composer Peter takes a trip to Hawaii where he discovers his ex-girlfriend Sarah and her new boyfriend are staying at the same resort, but he starts developing feelings for a hotel concierge named Rachel, leading to a turbulent competition with Sarah and her boyfriend, Aldous. Peter confronts Sarah after learning she cheated, eventually finding happiness with Rachel, and invites her to the opening of his puppet comedy-rock opera in Los Angeles, where she confesses her feelings for him, while Sarah moves on to starring in a TV show about reading animal minds.
