A group of working-class friends in Indiana bond over swimming in an abandoned quarry, and when one of them develops a crush on a university student, he pretends to be an Italian exchange student to get closer to her and competes in a bike race to impress her. Breaking Away is a 1979 American English-language Comedy Drama movie starring Dennis Christopher, Dennis Quaid, Daniel Stern, Jackie Earle Haley, Barbara Barrie, Paul Dooley and John Vande Velde. Breaking Away was Produced by Peter Yates. Breaking Away is written by Steve Tesich and directed by Peter Yates. 20th Century Fox acquired the distribution rights for the film. Breaking Away was released on 20th July 1979 and takes a screen time of 101 minutes. and it received positive reviews from critics when it was released and became successful at box office. Breaking Away was made on a budget of $2 million and it was a super hit at box office gross of $16 million. Cinematography was done by Matthew F. Leonetti and editing by Cynthia Scheider. The music was composed by Patrick Williams. At the 1980 Oscar Awards It won an award for Best Writing, Screenplay Written Directly for the Screen.
