He was elected to Kerala Legislative Assembly from Perinthalmanna constituency in 2011. An entrepreneur-turned-politician, Ali left the LDF and joined Indian Union Muslim League on the eve of assembly elections in 2011. He was elected as an MLA from Perinthalmanna in Malappuram district. In the previous two elections held in 2001 and 2006, he was elected to the assembly from Mankada segment as an LDF independent. He is a leader of Indian Union Muslim League.
