He was born in Zanesville, Ohio and died in Hollywood, California, from leukemia. He married Julia Nagl, a Broadway actress, in New York City in 1913. They had one child, Jacqueline F. James, M.D. (October 19, 1914 - December 28, 1986). They divorced the following year.
